Ryan

Ryan was a client who grew up with Daisy's, in a way — he came to us as a teenager, right around the time the salon itself was growing, and he stayed with us through a run of different looks over the following years.

He always knew exactly what he wanted. Adventurous, edgy, funky with his style expectations — the kind of client who'd come in ready to push somewhere new rather than just maintain what he already had. He changed his hair constantly. At one point the top section went into soft, warm browns lightening through to blonde, using a colour touch toner to get that warmth deliberately. Later there was a look with silver-white through the top and darker underneath that I don't have a photograph of — if I ever track one down, it'll get added here.

The images here span about a year and a half, not necessarily in order. The asymmetrical, choppier style — the one with a slight Warhol, new-romantic edge to it — was never actually photographed for a professional shoot. That one was taken in the garden, just Ryan coming in for a regular appointment while he was growing the cut out into more of a bowl shape with texture worked through it.

The more graphic bowl cut with the heavy blonde-on-dark colour-blocking was the one that made it to magazine work, photographed by Dave Sutton in 2003 — including the shot with Madeline, taken side by side. That same shoot produced Madeline's own piece, BRONZE PLANE© — styled flatter in one version for a more sixties look, then lifted for a different finish elsewhere in the same session.
