My About

I trained full-time in hairdressing, mentored early on by Pete Luke, and went on to work across various salons before joining a family business with a small team — where the work progressed to national and international magazine features and stage work in London.

This website is eclectic by nature, containing many blogs, concepts and idea's. It's important to mention that the website Is also a celebration of other's.

I wanted to build it with everyone in mind. Since none of us are islands and we need other's work, abilities and skills to collaborate with. It's a testament to their part in the earlier achievements.

I'm not currently working commercially, following a serious accident. But my mind has always worked in systems as much as colour — Living Colour Intelligence©, a formulation system built around precise colour-matching technology, and The Grid©, a business framework built from patterns. Both grew out of methods I developed years ago, and I've since been able to document them. I've also had a longstanding interest in microscopic hair and scalp analysis, of the kind used in trichology, though without formal training in it.

I don't build from references or trends — I work on instinct. I'll try something, see where it leads, then often develop a companion piece from there. It's experimental by nature, and it's mine.

Against the Grain isn't just about hair. It's about the ability to think outside the box and to celebrate that too!— the curiosity, the experimental streak that doesn't stop whether or not you're still in the industry. Chances are, if you're drawn to this, you already know something about not quite fitting the mould yourself.

Something a bit different. Have a look.

"It's a question, not an answer."

What began as a passion project has evolved into something more. We’re proud of where we’ve been and even more excited for what’s ahead. Against the Grain isn’t just our process—it’s the intention behind it. We take time to explore new ideas and concepts, and create with purpose and meaning at every turn.
